Ground Beef Is Almost 7 Bucks a Pound — Trump Just Cut a Deal to Drop It 25%

Ground beef currently costs an average of $6.89 per pound — up 57 percent from five years ago. Biden watched the American cattle herd shrink to its smallest size in modern history while doing nothing about it. Trump just concluded a 90-day deal to import up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef with no out-of-quota tariff, with a commitment that the beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices.

That’s not a press release. That’s a price cut at the grocery store counter, arriving within 90 days, for every American family that buys ground beef — which is to say, most of them.

The mechanics of the deal are smart and worth understanding. The 90-day window is intentional — it’s long enough to inject real supply into the market and drive prices down, but short enough to avoid permanently undercutting American cattle ranchers who are in the process of rebuilding their herds. You can’t grow a larger cattle herd in 90 days. That takes years of investment, breeding cycles, and market stability. This deal buys American ranchers the time and the market conditions they need to expand — while giving American families relief at the checkout line right now.

As Trump put it: “This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again.”

That sentence is the entire governing philosophy in miniature. Not a choice between helping American families and helping American producers — but a deal structured to accomplish both simultaneously, with a time limit that ensures the short-term relief doesn’t become a permanent structural disadvantage for domestic ranchers.

The contrast with the Biden approach deserves to be named. Biden watched beef prices rise 57 percent over five years. He watched the cattle herd shrink. He did nothing — because doing something would have required trade negotiations, tariff adjustments, and the willingness to upset somebody’s political coalition in exchange for actually delivering for working families. Biden’s economic philosophy was to let prices rise, blame corporate greed, and propose spending programs that added to the inflation he was generating.

Trump’s approach is to make deals. Canada blinked on tariffs this week. Ground beef prices are dropping by executive deal this week. Drug prices just posted their biggest annual decline in 60 years. Tax refunds are at historic highs. Record-low unemployment claims. Eighty-three thousand construction workers building factories.

Democrats voted against all the legislative achievements that produced this environment. They’ll spend the next 77 days claiming the credit anyway.

Ground beef at 25 percent below today’s market prices, for the next 90 days, nationwide. That’s what America First looks like at the grocery store.
