AOC’s Party Now: 202 House Democrats Were Asked to Sign ‘We Are Capitalists, Not Socialists’ — Only 10 Did

The question was simple. The answer was damning. A couple of moderate Democrats circulated a statement to all 212 Democratic members of the House of Representatives that read, in part: “We are capitalist, not socialist.” Two hundred and two of them refused to sign it. Only 10 did. Ten. Out of two hundred and twelve.

This is not a poll. This is not a focus group result that Democrats can dismiss as biased sampling or questionable methodology. These are elected members of the United States House of Representatives being given a piece of paper with five words on it and asked to put their name on it. And 95% of them couldn’t bring themselves to do it. The Democrats truly have become Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s party, not Hakeem Jeffries’ or Chuck Schumer’s party.

The pledge was part of a broader “Promise to America” initiative launched by centrist Democrats as a response to the DSA’s takeover of their party. Its full list of commitments included “We want safety, not lawlessness,” “We are responsible, not reckless,” “We are proud, not ashamed of America.” By any honest accounting, this is about as vanilla as political pledges get. And 202 Democrats in the House said no.

AOC’s response to the initiative was telling. She appeared on a radio program and attacked the pledge signers for failing to articulate what they actually stand for: “There’s no affirmative vision really coming from most places in the Democratic Party with the exception of democratic socialism.” She wasn’t wrong about the diagnosis. She simply views it as a feature rather than a problem.

The pledge numbers also arrive alongside a data point that Republicans should be clipping and distributing immediately: the polls dramatically overstated DSA performance in this week’s primaries. El-Sayed was up 12% in polling and won by 1%. Francesca Hong was up 22% and lost by 1%. The DSA’s actual coalition is significantly smaller than their polling suggests — which means that in general elections, where the electorate is substantially less ideologically extreme than Democratic primary voters, the gap between their apparent strength and their actual strength will be even larger.

This is the single most important piece of electoral data in the entire 2026 cycle for Republicans to understand. The left looks stronger than it is. Its candidates win primaries by thin margins in primary electorates that oversample their coalition. The general election is a different universe.

But the pledge numbers are the closing argument. Of 212 House Democrats, 202 couldn’t sign a statement that says “We are capitalist, not socialist” and “We are proud, not ashamed of America.”

Every Republican candidate in a competitive district should send their Democratic opponent that pledge. Put it in an ad. Ask them publicly to sign it. Force them to answer: are you a capitalist or not? Ninety-five percent of their colleagues already have.
