TMZ confirmed Monday what Capitol Hill insiders had apparently known for some time: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Riley Roberts called off their engagement roughly two years ago. The couple’s last widely circulated public photographs together date to the 2021 Met Gala — where AOC wore her famous “Tax the Rich” dress. She announced the engagement the following year. Recently, observers noticed she was no longer wearing her ring.

The timing of the revelation is what makes this genuinely interesting — and politically significant. Just days before the TMZ report, AOC filmed herself injecting fertility hormones and posted it to social media, telling followers she was freezing her eggs ahead of what is widely expected to be a 2028 presidential run.
“Usually, I keep my private life quite private,” she said — before making her fertility decisions anything but private — “but I wanted to share this because I was weighing it for a very long time.”
The egg-freezing reveal was framed as a statement about the burdens facing ambitious women that men don’t encounter. “Men run for office and people don’t think, ‘Is he gonna wanna start a family?'” she said. She called giving herself injections in a green room “badass.”
The absence of any mention of Riley Roberts in those videos now makes considerably more sense. She was describing her fertility decisions entirely in the first person, with no reference to a partner. The whole performance, in retrospect, looks like an attempt to preserve the optics of family-mindedness while navigating the reality of being single — a distinction that matters in a country where the majority of voters are still partnered or married, and where an unmarried woman running for president would face questions that a married one wouldn’t.
This is, incidentally, the same congresswoman who is being rebranded as a moderate in preparation for 2028. Jessica Tarlov argued on Fox News that AOC is “like a moderate Dem” compared to the “core DSA wing.” Scott Galloway conceded the point.
AOC is a member of NYC DSA. She has voted with the DSA platform consistently throughout her career. She is now apparently joking about “Woke 1” as if she weren’t its primary mascot — a calculated repositioning that the conservative internet is not going to let slide. Libs of TikTok posted video of her laughing about “Woke 1 was crazy” and noted that “AOC is already walking back and trying to rewrite history on her radical positions to appear moderate so she can run for president.”
The egg-freezing content. The secretly-called-off engagement. The “moderate” rebranding. The fake-southern accent. The Senate-was-founded-on-Jim-Crow history lesson (by the way, ‘Jim Crow’ laws were products of the Democratic Party). And so on.
AOC may be the 2028 frontrunner. She’s also doing a remarkable job of providing her own opposition research. Republicans should let her keep going.
