New Jersey admitted it registered 6,600 noncitizens to vote. Nearly 400 of them actually cast ballots. The DOJ launched a federal investigation. And when asked Monday to hand over the names of those noncitizens so federal investigators can determine what happened, Governor Mikie Sherrill (D) refused — while calling the noncitizens “citizens of New Jersey.”
That’s not a slip of the tongue. That’s a governing philosophy.
“I am not in the habit of turning over private, identifying information of the citizens of New Jersey,” Sherrill said at a press conference. The noncitizens who were illegally registered on her watch are, in her telling, citizens whose data she’s protecting. The Americans whose votes were canceled out by illegal ballots apparently don’t rate the same protection.
Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon’s response was exactly right: “Every single person who voted illegally canceled out the vote of a New Jersey voter. That is shameful.” She added that Sherrill knew this voter roll bombshell was coming — and spent weeks calling Trump a liar about election integrity while sitting on a scandal she was aware of in her own backyard.
The sequence of events here is damning and deserves to be stated plainly. Sherrill issued a Strongly Worded Tweet when the story broke, positioning herself as the responsible Democrat handling a mess left by the previous administration. The voting machine company disputed that framing immediately — pointing back to state election officials who manually approved noncitizen registrations rather than any software failure. Then the DOJ set a deadline for the names. Sherrill’s response to that deadline was to hold a press conference and announce she’s blocking compliance while calling noncitizens “citizens.”

This is the same pattern playing out in California, Minnesota, and every blue state the DOJ has attempted to access voter roll data from. Admit the minimum. Blame the software. Promise transparency. Then obstruct any actual verification. The language may vary from state to state — Sherrill calls it protecting “private, identifying information,” Newsom calls it protecting voters from a weaponized federal government — but the operational result is identical: no data, no names, no accountability.
The irony is worth dwelling on. Sherrill ran for governor as the responsible, moderate alternative to the dysfunction plaguing the Democratic Party. She was supposed to be the kind of Democrat who could actually govern. Her response to finding 6,600 noncitizens on her voter rolls was to protect their privacy from federal investigators while criticizing Trump’s election integrity agenda.
Abigail Spanberger (D) — Sherrill’s former congressional roommate and Virginia’s governor — is simultaneously backing a partisan redistricting scheme designed to disenfranchise Republican and rural voters across her state. Two former roommates. Two governors. Two separate strategies for the same objective.
Dhillon is not bluffing. The DOJ doesn’t issue investigative deadlines as a courtesy. New Jersey needs to produce the names — or discover what federal non-compliance with a lawful DOJ demand actually costs a state in practice.
Sherrill called them citizens. The law disagrees. So does Harmeet Dhillon.
