The Wisconsin Brewer Who Promised Free Beer on Trump’s Death Just Got Hit By the Karma Bus

Kirk Bangstad spent years building his brand around hating Donald Trump. It was his identity, his marketing strategy, and apparently his entire personality. He made national news in April when someone tried to assassinate the president at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner — and Bangstad’s response was to promise free beer to his customers on the event of Trump’s death.

That was April. This is July. And the Wisconsin Department of Revenue just revoked his brewing license.

Let’s be absolutely clear about what happened here, because Bangstad will spend the next several months trying to make himself into a martyr, and the facts deserve to be stated plainly. He did not lose his license because he wished death on the president. He did not lose it because of any action by the Trump administration. He did not lose it because Wisconsin Republicans decided to punish a political enemy. He lost it because state regulators seized canned beer from his operation in June, alleging it had been transported from Illinois without the required permits and taxes. He got caught moving product across state lines without paying what he owed.

In other words: he broke the rules. The same rules that apply to every other brewer in Wisconsin. The same rules he would presumably demand be enforced against anyone else who violated them. And now Wisconsin is enforcing them against him and his company, Minocqua Brewing.

Bangstad’s response was predictably theatrical. He vowed to fight “tooth and nail” and promised that the state would have to “pry me out of my taprooms before I stop selling beer to thirsty progressives who come to visit us.” He published a Substack post calling it “an absurd act of heavy handedness.” He is already laying the groundwork for a victimhood narrative that positions him as a political prisoner rather than a brewer who got caught not paying his taxes.

The facts are stubborn things. The state pursued his license not for his politics but for his paperwork — or rather, his lack of it. If Bangstad can prove that the beer transport was done legally and that all required permits and taxes were in order, he has a legitimate legal fight ahead of him. If he can’t, he has a tax compliance problem dressed up in political grievance clothing.

There’s a lesson here that extends beyond one brewer in northern Wisconsin. When you make your business about your politics — when your brand is essentially “I hate the president and I’m proud of it” — you attract scrutiny that a quieter operation might never see. That scrutiny found something real. Whether the enforcement was triggered by political attention or routine state oversight is ultimately irrelevant. The violation either happened or it didn’t.

Wisconsin says it did. The license is gone.

Kirk Bangstad wanted free beer on Trump’s demise. He got his license revoked on his own.

As endings go, it’s considerably more satisfying than free beer.
