Zohran Mamdani has done something that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez couldn’t manage in seven years of trying: he’s forced the Democratic Party to drop the pretense. The masks are off. The lizard faces are fully visible. And Republicans have approximately four months to make sure every voter in America sees them clearly.
The word that Washington has been tiptoeing around is now unavoidable: communism. Not democratic socialism. Not progressive populism. Not ‘bold new ideas for working families.’ Communism — government-run supermarkets, abolition of private property rights, seizure of the means of production. Mamdani isn’t hiding any of it. He campaigned on it. He won on it. And he’s governing on it in the nation’s largest city.
What’s more, he’s inspiring other commies to win elections using the Democrat Party as their vehicle to power.
Two Republican congresswomen said what needed to be said this week, loudly and without apology.
Nicole Malliotakis — whose mother fled Fidel Castro’s Cuba in 1959 — stood at a press conference and delivered the history lesson the country desperately needs: “Communism destroys. It steals from the people. People end up living in squalor and lack the basic needs that human beings need, and the people that run the regime live as kings.” She then connected those words directly to what’s happening right now in American cities: Mamdani’s agenda is not a novel experiment. It’s a replay of a script that has been performed in Cuba, Venezuela, and every other country that traded freedom for a government that promised to run everything better than the people could themselves.
Rep. Lisa McClain of Michigan went after the rebranding operation with equal force: “They’ve polished their branding. They’ve packaged it for social media and marketed it to young Americans and college campuses all over the world. They’ve packaged it as compassion.” She’s right. A friendlier name doesn’t change the ideology. It doesn’t change the endgame. And the endgame of every communist movement in history is the same: concentrated power, crushed dissent, and ordinary people living in conditions that the rulers who promised to save them would never tolerate for themselves.
1950s-era GOP Sen. Joe McCarthy was right. That sentence still triggers the left after seven decades, which tells you everything you need to know about how thoroughly they understand its implications. The Red Scare was real. The infiltration of American institutions by people hostile to American values was real. The academics and activists who spent fifty years dismissing those warnings produced exactly the conditions that gave us Mamdani, the DSA, and a Democratic Party that can’t bring itself to clearly oppose any of it.
Every generation provides new young minds for the communists to recruit. Every generation requires someone willing to call it what it is.
Republicans have the clearest target they’ve had in decades: a self-described democratic socialist running New York City on a platform that would have been immediately recognizable to Fidel Castro as a fellow traveler.
Name it. Say the word. Repeat it until November.
The masks are off. Make sure the voters see the faces underneath.
