New Jersey Just Found 6,600 Non-Citizens Registered to Vote — But Democrats Swear It Never Happens

Democrats have a favorite line they deploy every time someone raises concerns about election integrity: voter fraud doesn’t happen, noncitizen voting doesn’t happen, the rolls are clean, and anyone who suggests otherwise is a dangerous conspiracy theorist trying to undermine democracy.

New Jersey just found 6,600 noncitizens registered to vote. Fewer than 400 of them apparently actually voted. The rest were sitting on the rolls, registered and eligible, a “serious software error” away from casting ballots in American elections.

This is the thing that never happens. Happening. Again.

Governor Mikie Sherrill — who took office in January and is doing her level best to position herself as a reasonable Democrat in a party careening toward socialism — announced Tuesday that New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System had been erroneously registering noncitizens to vote between June 2023 and June 2024. These were people who had explicitly indicated on a keypad that they were not U.S. citizens when applying for driver’s licenses and identification cards. The system registered them anyway. For a year. Without anyone noticing or fixing it.

Sherrill’s announcement followed a well-worn script. Blame the predecessor. Announce an investigation. Promise reforms. Pivot to attacking Trump. She threw Governor Phil Murphy under the bus efficiently — “this happened under the previous administration” — while making sure to note that Trump “has zero credibility on the issue of election integrity.” She closed with a paragraph about her commitment to ensuring “every eligible citizen can vote.”

Last week I learned that a serious software error in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System led to the registration of roughly 6,600 people who indicated that they were not U.S. citizens between June 2023 and June 2024, almost three years prior to my taking office. These individuals…

The irony of that final line is apparently lost on her. She is the governor of a state that is actively refusing to cooperate with the Department of Justice’s efforts to verify voter rolls ahead of the November midterms. The DOJ has sued New Jersey — along with four other states — for failure to produce voter roll data. Sherrill is fighting those requests in court while simultaneously claiming she takes election integrity with the utmost seriousness.

You cannot simultaneously refuse to show federal authorities your voter rolls and claim to be protecting election integrity. These are mutually exclusive positions. Sherrill is holding both of them anyway, because the Democratic Party’s actual position on election integrity is that scrutiny is welcome only when it doesn’t risk exposing anything.

Here’s what the 6,600 number tells you that Sherrill’s carefully managed statement doesn’t: this is one state, covering one year, from a known software error that was eventually caught. It says nothing about the years before the error was identified. It says nothing about other registration pathways. It says nothing about the states that are refusing to provide their data to federal investigators at all.

Trump declassified documents this week showing 270,000 noncitizens illegally registered across just four states where the federal government could obtain the data. The states blocking that data review — New Jersey among them — are the ones with the most to hide.

The thing that never happens just happened 6,600 times. Pass the SAVE America Act. Now.
