So, About Those ‘Burn Bags’ Trump Mentioned During His Election Security Address

Here’s the sentence that should stop every American cold: the burn bags were supposed to be destroyed. Trump wasn’t supposed to win.

In his Thursday night primetime address, President Trump disclosed something that has received far less attention than it deserves — the discovery of significant numbers of burn bags in the FBI building containing sensitive documents from the Obama administration. Documents that were explicitly ordered to be incinerated. Documents that, through some combination of bureaucratic incompetence and providential luck, were never destroyed.

“Maybe we got lucky,” Trump said. He may be understating it considerably.

For those unfamiliar with federal records protocol, burn bags are exactly what they sound like — containers used to collect classified or sensitive materials slated for destruction. They are a routine part of government operations. What is not routine is finding them sitting in an FBI building, unburned, full of Obama-era documents that someone with access to sensitive intelligence decided should never see the light of day.

Trump has ordered the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the DOJ, the FBI, and the CIA to review the contents — analyzing what the documents contain, whether any laws were broken in their handling, and what the chain of custody looked like from the moment they were packaged for destruction to the moment they were discovered.

The left’s pre-packaged response to all of this is already in circulation, and it follows a predictable script: finding documents doesn’t prove a conspiracy, criminal charges require more than political accusations, you’d need to establish knowing violations of federal law, and so on. All of this is technically true and entirely beside the point.

Nobody is claiming that the existence of unburned bags is itself proof of a crime. What it is proof of is opportunity — the opportunity to examine documents that were deliberately slated for destruction by an administration that had every reason to want certain information gone before January 20, 2017. What those documents actually contain is the question that matters. And that question is now in the hands of federal investigators with subpoena power and access to the full intelligence apparatus.

Here’s the context that makes this discovery genuinely explosive rather than merely interesting. Trump’s address already revealed that CIA analysts softened assessments of Chinese election interference, that FBI officials described running a “shadow government” to hide election intelligence from the White House, and that NSA members altered Presidential Daily Briefings to conceal the finding that China was working to defeat the sitting president. All of that happened during the Obama-Biden transition period and the early Trump years.

And now there are burn bags. Full of documents someone wanted gone. Found sitting in an FBI building by the administration that wasn’t supposed to come back.

The federal government is not known for its operational precision. Someone dropped the bag — literally. What was supposed to be ash is now evidence.

The review has begun. The contents will tell the story. And the left’s messaging operation is already running damage control on documents it hasn’t seen yet.

That last part tells you everything.
