Give Jonathan Karl credit. It doesn’t happen often, but on Sunday morning he did something the mainstream media almost never does to Democratic senators: he fact-checked one in real time, on camera, with the receipts right in front of him.
Senator Mark Warner — ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, professional Trump critic, and one of the most vocal opponents of the SAVE America Act — went on ABC’s This Week to explain why Democrats are right to block legislation requiring photo ID to register and vote. His argument was straightforward: Virginia already has voter ID, he said. He even started to gesture as if he was pulling out his wallet to prove it.
Jonathan Karl stopped him cold.
“That’s actually not the case. I mean, I’m a Virginia voter. You don’t need to show a photo ID in Virginia.”
ABC: "You and every other Democrat oppose the SAVE America Act… requiring photo ID to register to vote, is this Democrats should get behind?"
WARNER: “In Virginia, we have voter ID and photo ID!”

Warner’s response — after getting caught telling a flat-out falsehood on national television — was to claim that signing an affidavit is basically the same thing as showing a photo ID. It isn’t. Not even close. Virginia’s own Department of Elections website states plainly that if you show up to vote without acceptable ID, you can sign an ID statement and cast a regular ballot. No photo. No verification. Just a signature and a ballot. That is the system Mark Warner just told ABC News viewers was equivalent to photo ID.
It isn’t. He lied. ABC caught him. Move on.
Except it doesn’t end there — because the context surrounding Warner’s voter ID lie is considerably more explosive than the lie itself.
Mark Warner chaired the Senate Intelligence Committee from 2021 through 2025. That’s the same period during which, according to the declassified intelligence Trump released Thursday night, CIA analysts were softening assessments of Chinese election interference, FBI officials were running what they themselves described as a “shadow government” to hide election-related intelligence from the White House, and NSA members were altering Presidential Daily Briefings to conceal the conclusion that China was actively working to defeat a sitting American president.
Warner was the intelligence watchdog during all of it. He was the ranking member with oversight responsibility for the exact agencies now implicated in the cover-up. The question Jon Karl should have asked — but didn’t — is the one that actually matters: What did Mark Warner know about Chinese interference in American elections, and why didn’t he tell the American people?
Instead Warner got to pivot from his voter ID lie to his standard talking points about election security, largely unchallenged beyond the initial fact-check.
But here’s what the exchange actually revealed: Democrats are so committed to blocking voter ID that their own senior senator doesn’t even know what his state’s election laws say. He’s been arguing against a requirement he falsely claimed already existed — on national television, under the bright lights, with a fact-checker sitting three feet away.
Eighty percent of Americans support photo voter ID. Seventy-one percent of Democrats support it. Mark Warner just demonstrated exactly why his party keeps losing this argument.
