While Dropping Bombs on Iran, Trump Still Found Time to Bring Another American Home From Iranian Captivity

This is what American strength actually looks like.

While CENTCOM was running its third consecutive night of strikes against Iranian military targets, while the administration was formally notifying Congress of resumed hostilities, while the president was preparing a primetime address to the nation — somebody also negotiated the release of an American woman who had been trapped in Iran since December 2024.

Her name is Dena Karari. She is an Iranian-American citizen who was detained not for anything resembling a crime, but for her work with the Children of Mehr Foundation — a U.S.-registered nonprofit providing books, literacy programs, and humanitarian assistance to impoverished children in rural Iran. Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security interrogated her dozens of times, slapped bogus charges of espionage and collaboration with a hostile state on her, and held her not in prison but through a coercive exit ban that prevented her from leaving the country for over a year and a half.

Interrogated dozens of times for giving books to poor children. That’s the Islamic Republic in miniature.

Trump announced her release Tuesday on Truth Social, noting she had been wrongfully detained under “Sleepy Joe Biden” and was now safely outside Iran in good condition. He also acknowledged Iran’s “gesture of goodwill” — with the cool appreciation of a man who understands exactly what that gesture actually represents. Iran isn’t releasing American hostages out of the goodness of their hearts. They’re releasing them because the alternative involves more American bombs and they are rapidly running out of things to bomb.

The contrast with the Biden administration couldn’t be starker or more important. Biden spent four years desperately seeking a nuclear deal with Iran — offering sanctions relief, frozen funds, and diplomatic legitimacy to a regime that was simultaneously holding Americans hostage, funding terrorism across the Middle East, and accelerating its nuclear program. He paid ransom. He begged. He got Americans back occasionally, at enormous cost, after Iran had extracted every ounce of leverage possible.

Trump obliterated Iran’s nuclear program and is now systematically dismantling its military capability. And Iran is releasing Americans as a “gesture of goodwill.”

This is not a coincidence. Strength produces results that weakness never could. Every hostage who came home during appeasement cost America something. Every hostage who comes home under Trump costs Iran something — specifically, the calculation that defying America is worth the price.

Karari’s attorney confirmed her ordeal involved enormous physical and psychological hardship over eighteen months of interrogations and captivity. She is on her way back to the United States. Her nightmare is over.

Joe Biden left her there. Trump brought her home — while simultaneously conducting military operations against the country that held her.

That’s not a talking point. That’s the record.

Welcome home, Dena Karari. Good to have you back.
