Let’s be clear here: The Trump administration does want former FBI Director James Comey imprisoned, but not for the charges he has been indicted on. The Department of Justice (DOJ) issued an arrest warrant for Comey due to a controversial Instagram post he made in 2025 that appeared to suggest support for the assassination of President Trump. You remember it, right? The rock formation ‘8647,’ which Comey claims he just happened upon while walking on a beach with his wife. The inferrence, which Comey claimed ignorance, is that someone should “86” – bump off, eliminate, take out – ’47’ – Trump, the 47th president.
The DOJ previously indicted him for giving false testimony to Congress, but the case was dismissed last year. The charges seem exaggerated, and I doubt this latest charge will progress far in the legal process before a judge dismisses it again. However, that’s not the issue—the process itself serves as punishment. Democrats made former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s life miserable, and they did the same to President Trump, all over the unfounded allegations of Russia collusion.
In a post on Tuesday, former CNN political reporter Chris Cillizza accurately described Trump’s intentions: He doesn’t genuinely want to convict Comey, who could face up to 20 years in prison based on the indictment, but rather he aims to make Comey’s life a living hell:

I have to say, I don’t have a single issue with this after what the Domestic Terrorism Party has done to Trump, his associates, his family, his inner circle, and the Jan. 6 political prisoners. Comey’s fingerprints are all over the Russian collusion hoax, which he knew was bulls**t from the get-go. He knew it was a political hit job crafted by Hillary Clinton’s campaign (so did Barack Obama and John Brennan, for that matter).
So by all means, Mr. President, do what you have to in order to make the lives of these deep state miscreants as miserable as possible. And if you can get some convictions along the way, even better.
