By now, you’re likely aware that former President Joe Autopen Biden had his wife take him to “The View’ this week and sat down next to him as he mumbled and bumbled his way through a farcical interview that featured him claiming — again — that he could have beaten President Trump, he was in control of his faculties (!), and that his VP, Kamala Harris, was actually more qualified than the current commander-in-chief, to be in the Oval Office. Yes, his interview was that kind of clown show.

But while Republicans of course took some jibs and jabs at Biden, the other side of the aisle was more upset at his appearance. Like, a lot more upset. Several Democrats criticized Biden for appearing publicly despite cognitive concerns. Anthony Coley, who worked under the Biden administration, told The Hill, “Every time Joe Biden emerges, we fight an old war,” and that the Democratic brand “needs trusted messengers and fighters who can reach independents and moderates and inspire the base. Joe Biden ain’t that.”
Some people praised Biden for recognizing his part in the Democrats’ defeat last year, while others felt that wasn’t sufficient. A Democratic strategist told The Hill that the former president needs to “take responsibility for his actions” and “acknowledge that he was a factor in the Democrats’ loss.” Another strategist suggested that “the most significant litmus test for any Democrat in the 2028 field will be how and if they admonish Biden for the political judgment in the final 18 months of his political career.”
Democrats have every reason to be frustrated. Biden’s handling of his re-election bid—and his refusal to step aside sooner—has severely damaged the party’s chances, leaving them politically vulnerable at every level. Had Biden simply announced he wouldn’t seek a second term, Democrats might have had time to unify around a stronger candidate. They may have even avoided nominating former Vice President Kamala Harris, whose candidacy has faced widespread criticism.
Then again, Democrats themselves have a lot of responsibility for their trouncing, too. Besides covering up Biden’s mental decline, the Potty Mouth Party has embraced the most left-wing domestic and cultural policies imaginable. No way they were gonna beat Trump.
