A noted Democratic pollster is the latest insider to come out at reveal what his party’s biggest problem is and how they can fix it, but based on the behavior of current party members of late, no one seems to be listening. Mind you, that’s great for MAGA and Republicans in general, but maybe not so good for a sizable portion of the country represented by the Potty Mouth Party.
Former Clinton pollster Mark Penn said Wednesday that Democrats are facing political challenges because many Americans view them as overly partisan and extreme on key policy issues. Responding to an April 27 interview in which Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told CNN that his party is “totally united in focusing on [President Donald] Trump,” Penn told “Mornings With Maria” host Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business that Schumer’s remarks reflect the perception that Democrats are “purely partisan” and unwilling to collaborate with Trump on initiatives that could benefit the country.
“Chuck Schumer is one of the least popular politicians here in the country. I think he’s seen as really these days as close to a partisan hack rather than somebody who’s trying to solve the problems of the country,” Penn said. “And I think that’s the problem with the Democrats now. They’re seen as purely partisan, but off the deep end on some policy issues, not trying to be constructive, not listening to the will of the people to try to get things done together with the president.”
March polling by NBC News and CNN/SSRS showed Democrats with record low popularity ratings — 27% and 29%, respectively. Despite public dissatisfaction, Schumer stated on “Morning Joe” in March that his party’s objective is to diminish Trump’s popularity, and that he and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries share a unified attack strategy.
“We are fighting on all of the fronts to go after Trump, not have a circular firing squad, which Democrats tend to do, particularly when there’s such an enemy as Trump, so that the basic premise that we are going after him on — and Hakeem and I are working on this very closely together … is that Trump is taking things away from the middle class, from you, to pay for tax cuts for the rich,” he lied.
While Penn argued that Democrats’ refusal to work with President Trump harms the party politically, a March NBC News poll found that nearly two-thirds of Democratic voters preferred their congressional representatives not compromise with the president — which just goes to prove how cult-like the Democratic Party really is.
Trump has backed policies with vast public support, such as barring biological males from competing in female sports, deporting illegal immigrants and reducing government waste. These are all so-called ’80-20′ issues where 80 percent of the country is on one side, regardless of party affiliation, but congressional Democrats are on the side of the 20 percent. This isn’t a winning strategy going forward, but as Clinton pollster Penn suggested, current party members are too hung up on Trump hate to do what’s right for their constituents and the country.
