Democrats’ irrational — some would say dangerously irrational, given the two attempts on the man’s life — hatred of Donald Trump got juiced again this weekend when a noted legal expert with a history of being right made a stunning prediction about all the legal issues facing the 45th and 47th president. In an interview with Newsmax, constitutional attorney Alan Dershowitz rained on Democrats’ parade by predicting that all of the bogus, politically driven filings (and convictions) against him will eventually be overturned on appeal.
During an interview on Newsmax’s The Record with Greta Van Susteren, Dershowitz stated that Trump’s legal team is getting ready to appeal the Manhattan case, despite the fact that a formal sentence has not yet been issued. “The case is going to be appealed,” Dershowitz said. “Trump has hired Sullivan and Cromwell to be his lawyers to appeal the case.”
Trump was convicted in January, but the U.S. Supreme Court declined to take up the case. Judge Juan Merchan later issued an unconditional discharge, imposing no jail time, fines, or probation. Harvard Law School professor emeritus Dershowitz acknowledged the unusual nature of the sentencing but noted that the option to appeal is still available. “[Merchan] gave a sentence that was a non-sentence,” Dershowitz told Van Susteren. “But it’s enough to end the case and allow him to appeal.”
Dershowitz explained that Trump’s legal team would likely begin the appeals process with New York’s Appellate Division, followed by the state’s Court of Appeals, and possibly escalate the case to the U.S. Supreme Court. He also noted that an early point of contention could be whether an appeal is allowed in the absence of a finalized sentence.
“Now, the Court may say, wait a minute, there was no sentence, so we have no jurisdiction,” Dershowitz said. “But I think there is a schedule now. And there will be an appeal.” He went on to say that the conviction against Trump is built on “the weakest case in my 60 years of practicing law I have ever seen.” He then went on to make the prediction that will lead to a great gnashing of teeth among the Left: “I think they’re going to handle the appeal. I think they’re going to reverse the conviction, and if they don’t reverse the conviction, a higher court will.”
He also didn’t spare any criticism for the judges in some of Trump’s cases, including the New York sham led by sham artist and potential real estate fraudster Letitia James, the state attorney general. “The judge who sat on the disgraceful New York trial of Donald Trump for doing something that wasn’t even illegal deserves condemnation,” Dershowitz said, referring to Trump’s records case. “The judge in D.C., who didn’t recuse himself, notwithstanding the fact that his daughter is deeply involved in deportation — these judges deserve to be criticized. I will continue to criticize them, as I have in my 60-year career.”
