Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) is facing mounting criticism over recent comments that cast doubt on the integrity of the 2024 election—a position that echoes the very claims Democrats have long condemned when made by former President Donald Trump about the 2020 race. Once viewed as a rising figure within the Democratic Party, Walz’s reputation has taken a hit following a string of controversial remarks. He had already drawn backlash for his comments on Tesla’s stock and Elon Musk’s alleged divided loyalties, and his latest remarks on election security have only intensified the scrutiny.
During a town hall event alongside former U.S. Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke, Walz responded to a question from an audience member who alleged that Republicans had tampered with ballot tabulation machines in Clark County, Nevada. The county—considered a key battleground—flipped to Trump in 2024 with a 53-47% margin. The attendee claimed there was “some pretty convincing evidence of election tampering” by GOP operatives. Walz responded affirmatively, saying “Yeah,” which drew applause from the audience.
In the viral clip of the interaction, Walz elaborated further, falsely claiming, “We saw just recently Donald Trump’s executive order to make it more difficult, specifically for women, trying to make it more difficult for women to be able to vote.” He followed that up with another lie: “We see one of the first things they do is try and restrict the votes.” His comments echo familiar rhetoric used by Democrats to criticize GOP-backed voter integrity laws, which they claim disproportionately affect women and minority communities in order to scare them into supporting Democrat candidates.

The situation regarding Walz has drawn parallels to how claims of election tampering were addressed after Trump’s victories. In 2016, Hillary Clinton suggested that Russian interference played a significant role in her loss, asserting, “I was on the way to winning. We know that Putin was intent upon helping Trump.” Similarly, Karine Jean-Pierre, former press secretary to Joe Biden, tweeted after the 2016 election, “Stolen emails, stolen drone, stolen election … welcome to the world of #unpresidented Trump.” As expected, Walz was slammed for appearing to agree with the audience member who suggested the GOP ‘stole’ Clark County, Nev.
