On Saturday, Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., warned that the likelihood of additional assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump could increase as the election approaches. Her warning comes after two attempts on Trump’s life have already been thwarted, though the first attempt at a rally in Butler, Pa., in July only narrowly missed the former president, with a bullet grazing his right ear. One attendee was killed while two others were critically wounded.
“We have entered the most dangerous phase of the election,” Greene said on the X platform. “The momentum shift has happened and Trump is leading and his support is rapidly accelerating. I’m hearing it everywhere, even where I was not before. Democrats will do anything to stop him.” She added: “They’ve already been trying to put him in prison and literally assassinate him. What comes next? More assassination attempts? Will they delay the election? Be prepared.”
The second attempt on Trump’s life occurred at his golf course in Palm Beach, Fla., earlier this month. Secret Service agents spotted a rifle sticking out of a hedgerow near the 6th hole and fired at the alleged assailant, Ryan Routh, 58, who had reportedly take up his position there some 12 hours earlier. It’s not clear how he knew Trump was going to play a round of golf that day, though former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino has suggested there could be a “mole” within the agency, a frightening proposition.
“I have to ask you all a really troubling question now that I promised you 10 years ago I would have called myself nuts for asking this,” Bongino said before a long pause. “Is there a mole inside the DHS or Secret Service?”
He also shared that several documented schemes have involved foreign nationals or governments attempting to infiltrate and undermine federal agencies. For example, he recounted a recent story involving two individuals who were convicted of impersonating federal agents as part of a sophisticated plot that deceived the protective agency.
“Folks, what happened yesterday in Secret Service jargon, the movement to the golf, the golf course, Donald Trump going to play golf at the golf course is what we call an OTR. Stands for an off-the-record movement, meaning it’s not on the official schedule, meaning very few people have access to it,” Bongino explained. “What makes me even more curious about what happened yesterday is apparently the decision to golf was made at the last minute. Meaning, there were probably – when the decision was made, less than 10 people who knew about it. How’d this guy know to set up there?”
The former Secret Service agent-turned-successful podcaster also pointed out that the suspect, Routh, was not from the area. “How did he know how to set up, and where to set up, and that Trump was going to be there? Folks, the mole may not be a foreign national himself. I don’t want you to think Jason Bourne stuff. Don’t overcomplicate what doesn’t need to be over complicated,” he said.
He added: “Is there a honeypot trap going on in the Secret Service? Is there a guy or a woman in the Secret Service having a relationship with someone who is not who they say they are? The Iranians have been running these traps in Israel and elsewhere. The Iranians who want to kill President Trump. Folks, how do we know that there’s not some kind of honeypot trap and that some agent or some DHS personnel, someone who has to be notified, is not in a relationship with someone?”
