American Majority CEO Ned Ryun on Friday told FOX News host Piers Morgan that the country should prepare for former President Donald Trump to face off against California Gov. Gavin Newsom who, ostensibly, is going to jump into the race in an attempt to salvage a victory as Joe Biden fades and Kamala Harris remains very unpopular.
He also laid out a strategy that Republicans in swing states must employ if they want to win there.
Here’s a partial transcript (see video below):
MORGAN: Looking at the Republicans as all this is careering around, does it influence how Republicans may view their own choice of nominee in the sense if it is Biden, then they may want to go with somebody younger. If it’s not, they may want to go with somebody older. Does it factor in?
RYUN: I’m not really sure that it does, in fact, I’m not really looking at the Republican primary now as being deeply competitive.
You know, Donald Trump is clear in a way the frontrunner, DeSantis is completely stagnant. I don’t know who would replace DeSantis as a legitimate challenger to Trump.
I’m not saying the Republican primary is over, but Donald Trump is going to be almost impossible to beat in the Republican primary, so I think it’s going to be Donald Trump. If Biden can’t make it, I think we should actually, as Republicans, we should maybe plan on and have serious thoughts. It could be Donald Trump versus Gavin Newsom.
MORGAN: Who wins?
RYUN: It all comes down to who is better at chasing ballots in the battleground states and right now Democrats have a much better operation. If Republicans can figure out how to chase those ballots in the battleground states, Donald Trump can win.

In April, Newsom made a move that indicated to many political observers he intends to run.
He called up the Army National Guard in his state to aid in the cleanup efforts of San Francisco. Newsom has unveiled a new alliance between several key entities, including the California Highway Patrol (CHP), California National Guard (CalGuard), San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), and the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office (SFDA), in response to the fentanyl crisis.
Newsom said the agreement between all four agencies will focus on “dismantling fentanyl trafficking and disrupting the supply of the deadly drug in the city by holding the operators of large-scale drug trafficking operations accountable.”
He continued: “Two truths can coexist at the same time: San Francisco’s violent crime rate is below comparably sized cities like Jacksonville and Fort Worth—and there is also more we must do to address public safety concerns, especially the fentanyl crisis.
“We’re taking action. Through this new collaborative partnership, we are providing more law enforcement resources and personnel to crack down on crime linked to the fentanyl crisis, holding the poison peddlers accountable, and increasing law enforcement presence to improve public safety and public confidence in San Francisco,” he said.
“The San Francisco Police Department has been working hard to stop drug trafficking by making countless arrests and narcotics seizures,” said San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott. Despite our ongoing work and close collaboration with the District Attorney, the fentanyl crisis has contributed to hundreds of drug overdose-related deaths,” he added.
“We welcome the support of our state partners because when we work together, we can make a significant difference to make our city safer.”
